Alina Zagitova Free Skate Olympics 2018

It has been a drama-filled Olympic season for women figure skaters. Fifteen-year-old Alina Zagitova came into this competition with barely any experience under her belt. In fact, this season is her first year on the senior team. But she proved to the whole world that she deserved to be there — and to win.

On Feb. 22, Alina performed her free skate program to a Don Quixote medley. Her perfect jumps and beautiful musicality earned her 156.65 points, which gave her a total of 239.57 points overall. The real kicker is that her teammate, 18-year-old Evgenia Medvedeva (they work with the same coach), earned 238.26 points. Alina beat her older — and more experienced — rival by just over a point.

Alina celebrated her win with grace and style. It was hard to see Evgenia shed tears of disappointment, but getting a silver medal certainly isn’t a bad deal!

Although it was otherworldly to watch Alina’s performance, we can’t say we’re that surprised she was so flawless. In a recent practice session, Alina nailed five (five, y’all!) triple jumps in a row.

The full performance isn’t available online yet, but you can watch Alina perform the same routine at the 2017 World Junior Championships.
